Review: Rap? by Tierra Whack

On December 2, 2021, Tierra Whack released her new EP, titled “Rap?” The EP features three songs: “Stand Up,” “Meagan Good,” and “Millions.” While she released plenty of new individual songs in 2019 and 2020, “Rap?” Is her first collection of songs released since her debut album “Whack World” in 2018. A mix of rap and R&B, the Philadelphia-based artist will likely be pleasing her 2.6 million existing monthly listeners on Spotify, as well as gaining plenty of new fans.

The lead single off the EP is the first track, “Stand Up.” A music video was released on the same day as the EP, featuring Tierra Whack performing in a large and shiny red dress. The music video is extravagant, and one can tell there was much effort put into the creation and execution of it. In “Stand Up,” Tierra Whack expresses her desire for people to be authentic. She delivers lyrics such as “I come from the bottom/Gotta feed the block” to demonstrate her own authenticity, and says “I can’t trust a soul” in relation to inauthentic people.

In “Megan Good,” listeners will find Tierra Whack looking back at a past relationship. She starts the song with the chorus, which itself leads with “I know nothing lasts forever but I thought we would.” In “Millions,” Tierra Whack aims for large sums of money. This is bluntly stated in the refrain: “Y’all want millions/We want billions,” and reemphasized in the verses.

Tierra Whack is a rising talent who can both sing and rap. In “Rap?,” she does both, allowing listeners to take in the entirety of her talent while also crafting genuine and thought-provoking lyrics.
