EP Review: “Dead Summer” by Levi Zadoff and DEAD HENDRIX

On June 3, 2022, Levi Zadoff and DEAD HENDRIX released their EP “Dead Summer.” It includes four songs: “DON’T THINK IT COULD GET MUCH BETTER,” “ALONE,” “CANT BE GOD,” and “LOVE GAME,” as well as the bonus track “TEENAGE DIRTBAG.” This EP is a crossover between punk and rap that will best be enjoyed by those looking for music that crosses the lines between these two genres. Listeners will also likely enjoy the uniqueness of every track while also recognizing each song comes together to make a cohesive EP worthy of repeat listening.

The first track off “Dead Summer,” “DON’T THINK IT COULD GET MUCH BETTER,” explores a complicated relationship. Lyrics such as “I wanna talk but I ain’t got no time” and “Thought you were in this forever” demonstrate a relationship that may have seen better days. With this track, Levi Zadoff and DEAD HENDRIX introduce listeners to the guitars and drums that they will become accustomed to hearing throughout the EP. The second track, ”ALONE,” is more synth-heavy while also keeping the guitars and drums, and plays as more of a rap song than the punk song that precedes it. On the third track, “CANT BE GOD,” Levi Zadoff and DEAD HENDRIX take an introspective look, with one of the opening lyrics being “I don’t wanna die but if I die right now I’m fine.” This is followed by “LOVE GAME,” which features soaring electric guitars and the notable lyric “Trapped in my mind like a snow day.” Finally, the bonus track “TEENAGE DIRTBAG” closes out the EP with a combination of rapped vocals and prominent guitars.
